Otter Dance Community Gathering Day

December 10, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Hey Ya’ll, Trai and I are so excited about our upcoming Community Gathering. In addition to sharing in conversation, ideas, food we will be celebrating the holiday season as a community by participating in a traditional Give-Away Ceremony.
The Teaching of a Give-Away:
One of the most important ceremonies in Native American teachings is the Give-Away, or Potlatch, Ceremony. In this ritual, giving away of useful or loved possessions is a form of sharing with others. It is also a sign that the giver is willing to make a sacrifice and surrender a gift to another person without attachment or regret. The Native understanding of sacrifice originally meant “to make sacred”. To make any act or any gift sacred, one has to complete that action with a joyful heart and a humble attitude.
The lessons connected to this ceremony teach the people how to release possessions and to let go the ideas of importance connected with those belongings. The more prized the possession and the greater the sense of ownership, the more potent the lesson. The Give-Away Ceremony is never used to get rid of belongings that are no longer functional or badly in need of repair. Some gifts of the Give-Away may be made especially for the occasion. To give cast-off items is a disgrace to the giver and shows a lack of respect for the receiver.
All are welcome! Bring your drums, your potluck dish to share, your picnic blanket or your camping chair and let’s have some fun!
We want to share in community, food, and prayers but also have everyone share in the preparations.
**Our wish is for each of us to become self-sufficient and for this practice to become customary for you so we can operate as a more efficient community. NO GARBAGE and minimal clean up is our goal, so if you bring any trash or recyclable items, please take them home.
**Create a picnic bag for yourself!
-Include your plate/bowl
-Eating utensils
-Water toys
-Change of clothes
After eating you can put your items and leftover food back into your bag to take home. Please keep in mind, if we each don’t do our part, someone else has to do it for us. If everyone participates, we can make this happen!
